The ECHR awarded compensation to a human rights activist from Gelendzhik. He is serving 11 years in prison

The ECtHR awarded compensation in the amount of 12,700 euros to a human rights activist from Gelendzhik, Zufar Achilov. This was reported by "Caucasian Knot" with reference to the lawyer Anita Soboleva.

The court found that the Russian authorities had violated Achilov's right to freedom of assembly. Compensation was awarded in connection with several detentions in 2006, 2007 and 2011.

In particular, in April 2007, Achilov was detained at the building of the Legislative Assembly of the Krasnodar Territory during an agreed-upon picket against the appointment of Alexander Tkachev as governor of Kuban and for the resignation of President Vladimir Putin. The policemen interrupted the rally 10 minutes after the start and broke the posters of the human rights activist. The next day, the court found him guilty of petty hooliganism and sent him to serve an administrative arrest.

Achilov complained about the conditions in the isolation ward: he had to sit in an overcrowded cell on a concrete bench, they did not give food and did not receive packages in the IVS. Later, the decision to arrest was declared void, the court awarded Achilov compensation in the amount of 10,500 rubles.

We proved it, so we paid the price. In the case there is not a single evidence of our guilt in the bribe. But those who have money, they decide,” says Achilov’s human rights colleague Valery Semergey, who served 8 years on the same case.
