They have decided to install cameras with facial recognition in all Russian schools, Vedomosti reports , citing the government’s customer, the National Center for Informatization and a company developing a video surveillance system.

Cameras will be installed in corridors, halls, staircases and courtyards of educational institutions. Judging by the data on the government procurement website, the total amount of contracts exceeds 2 billion rubles, the publication notes.

The National Informatization Center said that the video surveillance system has already been installed in 1,608 schools in 12 regions. In the future, they plan to provide them to more than 43 thousand educational institutions, noted Elvis-neotech representative Evgeny Lapshev.

According to Lapshev, the company supplied more than 28 thousand cameras for the pilot project. The cost of each is about 10 thousand rubles. A representative of the contractor said that about 20 cameras are needed for one school.

The video surveillance system has a built-in facial recognition module from NtechLab . Lapshev explained that the technology makes it possible to identify faces in real time, compare them with the monitoring list and send notifications about matches. This way, schools will be able to control that only authorized visitors are on their premises and “immediately respond to the appearance of unwanted and unfamiliar persons,” the publication reports the words of an Elvis-neotech employee.

Lapshev added that the received data can be integrated with a digital diary, and parents will be able to receive notifications when students arrive at school. The company assured that all data is stored only in schools.
