The host of the Vremya program on Channel One, Kirill Kleimenov, talking about the shootout in the south-west of Moscow, said that Russian police are “heroes, not powerless idiots.”
“As I said the day before, this is not America here. Our police are not powerless idiots, our police are heroes. On Monday afternoon, risking their lives, they neutralized a dangerous criminal in the southwest of Moscow. And they won’t get anything for this except awards and honors,” says Kleimenov before the start of the story.
The program describes what the police went through during the attack. “<…> The entire shootout lasted literally a few seconds. When the inspectors twisted the attacker, both were already bleeding,” comments correspondent Dmitry Tolmachev.
Next, he talks about the condition of the police, how passers-by helped the inspectors before the ambulance arrived. The correspondent explains that the attack came as a complete surprise to the security forces and talks about them being awarded medals.
“Minister of Internal Affairs Kolokoltsev decided to submit to the president a proposal to award medals to both inspectors for excellence in maintaining public order,” the correspondent comments.
The shootout discussed in the program took place on June 15. A 25-year-old native of Ingushetia, Ratmir Galaev, approached the car of traffic police inspectors who stopped a taxi driver on Leninsky Prospekt and began shooting.
One of the injured police officers was taken to intensive care. Galaev himself was detained and also taken to the hospital. The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case regarding an attack on the life of law enforcement officers (Article 317 of the Criminal Code).
