WHO chief: coronavirus pandemic is accelerating

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, said that the coronavirus pandemic is not close to completion, but, on the contrary, is accelerating.

“We all want this (COVID-19 pandemic) to end. We all want to live our lives. But the harsh reality is that it's not even close to being finished. While many countries have made some progress, the pandemic is actually accelerating,” Ghebreyesus said at a press briefing.

The head of WHO noted that six months after the first cases of infection were reported in China, more than 10 million people worldwide were found to have coronavirus, and 500,000 of them died. “Many people remain receptive. The virus still has a lot of room for development,” said Ghebreyesus.

Mike Ryan, one of WHO's leading experts, said at the same time that gigantic progress has been made in developing a safe and effective vaccine against COVID-19, but there is no guarantee that this will work.
