Central Election Commission of Belarus: Babariko collected enough signatures to register as a presidential candidate, Tsepkalo did not

The Central Election Commission of Belarus reported that six contenders for the presidency of the country have collected 100,000 authentic signatures of voters necessary for registration as candidates for the presidency of the country, BelTA writes.

They included Viktor Babariko, Andrei Dmitriev, Anna Kanopatskaya, Alexander Lukashenko, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and Sergei Cherechen.

The CEC recognized more than 1.9 million signatures for Alexander Lukashenko. Radio Liberty points out that the Central Election Commission rejected three percent of the signatures for the incumbent president.

As tut.by notes , Anna Kanopatskaya previously said that she submitted 110,000 signatures to the CEC, but the commission recognized a larger number of signatures — 146,000 — as authentic. Sergei Cherechen handed over 106 thousand signatures to the commission - the CEC counted more than 143 thousand signatures.

The headquarters of Viktor Babariko said that he did not agree with the decision of the CEC to recognize only 165,744 signatures out of 365,000 handed over. The headquarters intends to file complaints with the regional election commissions.

Another contender Valery Tsepkalo, according to the CEC, handed over a little more than 75 thousand signatures. Tsepkalo's headquarters is going to appeal against the rejection of voters' signatures.

The presidential elections in Belarus will be held on August 9.

Viktor Babariko is considered the main competitor of Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections in Belarus. Babariko was charged under a criminal article, he is in a pre-trial detention center.
