Data on Russia in the form of a map and a table . We update them every day.
The head of WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said that the pandemic is not ending, but, on the contrary, is accelerating . From July 1, the European Union will open external borders for 14 countries . This list, as expected, does not include Russia and the United States. WHO is going to send a team of scientists to China to investigate the origin of the coronavirus .
We answer questions about the pandemic again: about quarantine, the second wave and the economy . Spoiler: it is impossible to say that quarantine was not needed . Although we do not know exactly how the restrictive measures of various governments really affected the epidemic. We also tell what we know and what we still do not know about the pandemic, what were the shortcomings of the models for the spread of the disease, and how many people were ill in Moscow.
Quarantine in Russia has saved at least 80 thousand lives . These are the findings of a study by the Higher School of Economics. It also follows from the work that if the authorities and citizens completely ignored the epidemic, then from March 1 to June 24, 3.8 million people would have died .
We tell the stories of families who have lost their jobs and who do not even have enough money for food . It was especially hard for those who had previously barely managed to make ends meet. According to the deputy head of Rosstat, Konstantin Laikam, over 80% of the poor are families with children. Now they fear that the children will be taken away by the guardianship authorities. And not everyone manages to get the required “coronavirus” benefits. Some families came to the aid of charitable foundations .
During quarantine in Russia, 680,000 workers were laid off . In total, about 15 million people did not work. The head of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Maxim Reshetnikov, calls this number of layoffs a "good result" - because it is 4.5% of 15 million. According to a survey by the NAFI analytical center, 45% of Russians did not have savings before the crisis . 29% had them, but they were not enough
Restrictions are being returned in some countries. Has the second wave started there? In the US, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is breaking records. In Germany, more than half a million people have been quarantined due to a new outbreak. In Israel, the sanitary rules are again tightened. At the same time, somewhere the second wave is not visible , and somewhere you can even see the third.
Cirque du Soleil has filed for bankruptcy protection . Due to the pandemic, the circus was forced to stop performing. The company had to lay off almost 90% of the staff . As the show resumes, most of them are slated to be hired back.
PS There is not a lot of good news in this newsletter, so tell us what good things are happening to you while quarantine is around. And we will tell your stories to make it easier for all of us.
Here is what our reader Natalia wrote to us:
I live in London. We had a strict lockdown for quite some time, and as soon as we were allowed to go to the parks with family members, I quickly met on Tinder with a cool, pretty cop. The first dates were in the park, on the grass, with paper cups of coffee. We felt like teenagers and chatted about everything in the world. Now we are a quarantine family. We agreed that until the end of history we are together, honest with each other, we will not spread the virus further. We talk for hours, support each other, laugh, cook, watch movies, walk, holding hands, ready, if anything, to prove to the police that we are members of a household. Marvelous. We may not be together for life, but my quarantine has gone from torment to something tactile, warm, and magical.

We cover the situation with the coronavirus pandemic as fully as possible - and use only verified sources of information. In our mailing list, unlike WhatsApp messages, there will never be pseudo-scientific nonsense. Forward this letter to your friends and ask them to sign if you think it is important for them to receive only reliable information.
Evening Jellyfish sponsor Hillʼs , a dog and cat food company , asked our podcast hosts to remember touching and funny experiences that happened to their pets. Listen, for example, as Natasha Gredina, the author of the show about the TV series “What to Watch,” recalls her Airedale Terrier Sheri (Natasha even got a tattoo with her!). And smile!
