Human rights activists appealed to the head of the Investigative Committee in connection with the death of a Chechen woman who died during a family quarrel. Ramzan Kadyrov intervened in the matter

Human rights and public organizations sent an appeal to the head of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin in connection with the death of 23-year-old resident of Gudermes Madina Umayeva.

The signatories of the appeal, which Meduza has reviewed, are asking Bastrykin to collect materials about Umayeva's death from Chechen law enforcement agencies and hand them over to the Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee for a preliminary investigation, the course of which should be taken under personal control by the head of the Investigative Committee. In Chechnya, the appeal says, the investigation is under pressure from the executive branch.

The appeal was signed by the heads of more than 20 human rights and public organizations from Russia and other countries, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Civic Assistance Committee, the Law Zone, Team 29 and Memorial.

• Madina Umayeva died on June 12. Umayeva's relatives on her husband's side claim that she fell down the stairs during an epileptic seizure. At the same time, relatives of Umayeva on the part of her mother and father reported that she repeatedly complained about violence from her husband and tried to leave him several times.
• Umayeva's mother suspected that her husband had killed her daughter. An inspection was organized, Umayeva's body was exhumed. The results of the examination have not yet been reported. On June 23, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, intervened. He arrived in Gudermes and met with the relatives of the deceased, her husband and his family. At the meeting, Kadyrov reportedly stated that a woman "had to cling to her marriage," adding, "Sometimes the husband beats." After the meeting, Umayeva's mother publicly apologized to Kadyrov for her assumptions about her daughter's murder.
