Russian journalists - about the case of Svetlana Prokopyeva, who threatens six years in prison for the column

In February 2019, the Pskov journalist Svetlana Prokopyeva came with a search - they opened a criminal case against her under an article on the justification of terrorism (part 2 of article 205.2 of the Criminal Code). The reason was the Prokopyeva column dedicated to the attack in Arkhangelsk in October 2018, when 17-year-old Mikhail Zhlobitsky blew himself up at the entrance to the FSB building, accusing the security forces and repressions before. The accusation considered that Prokopyeva, arguing about the causes of the young man, introduced him to a fighter with a repressive state. The journalist herself in the last word said that her task was to try to find the reasons why "this unhealthy, abnormal terrorist attack arose." The prosecutor's office demanded that Prokopiev were sentenced to six years in prison and forbid her to make journalism for four years. The verdict will be announced at noon on July 6.

I believe that this is an absolutely fabricated business. There are no hints of justification of terrorism in the text of Svetlana Prokopyeva. I don’t understand at all how to judge someone for words-this is a direct attack on freedom of speech. This is an inverted picture. The state cannot be offended, it cannot be offended. It should not experience emotions and cannot demand apologies.

But we live in a situation where the state requires them constantly, and if an apology is not distinguished enough, applies strength. The state should just work - protect us, and not cause fear, demonstrate muscles and encourage people who use its apparatus of violence in their interests. The text for which Svetlana Prokopyeva can now be in prison for six years is about a teenager who made an explosion in the building of the FSB of Arkhangelsk. Then I wrote a lot about them: about how they do suicide, how they attack teachers in schools, and some try to change something for themselves-but they cannot. Because a teenager is still a small person, and he needs support: parents, mentors and - in the end - the state. Svetlana wrote precisely from this, attracting attention to the problem of human defenselessness in our country and the prevailing system of the power state.

There are very few independent journalists in Russia. In Russia, there are very few good regional journalists. We should not allow Svetlana to plant - because any of us can become the next one, for absolutely any text. After all, it’s easier to blame us who write about problems, of terrorism, than to force the state to solve social problems.

Еще в этом тексте есть, безусловно, осуждение государства, которое выбрало репрессии в качестве способа коммуникации с оппозицией и с людьми, которые в чем-то с ним не согласны. И я тоже не знаю ни один суд в мире, который мог бы за это осудить. Кроме известных государств типа Северной Кореи. Но если Россия выбрала Северную Корею как ориентир, к которому нужно стремиться, то посочувствовать нужно не Светлане Прокопьевой, а всем нам.

Второе — это дело должно быть прекращено, потому что в нем есть явные признаки фальсификации. Я имею в виду, прежде всего, три экспертизы, которые проводились в рамках этого дела. Чтобы доказать так называемые признаки оправдания терроризма, должно быть экспертное заключение, которое эти признаки в статье обнаружит. Те эксперты, которые были привлечены стороной обвинения, во-первых, сделали две противоречащие друг другу экспертизы. А во-вторых, третья экспертиза, которая, насколько я понимаю, стала окончательной в этом коротком списке доказательств от обвинения, вообще выполнена институтом, который отрицает свою причастность к этой экспертизе.

Но в целом, мне кажется, и суд, и граждане России должны читать по-русски и понимать слова, которые написаны черным цветом на белом фоне. Эксперты, которые объясняли бы суду смысл этих слов, избыточны.

Но, кажется, в этом году и правда принято решение больше ни с кем не «миндальничать»: одиночные пикеты вывели из законной зоны (я вот только что вышел из ОВД после очередного задержания — на этот раз на одиночном пикете в поддержку Светланы Прокопьевой), осудили Кирилла Серебренникова, серьезно повредив всей российской культуре, опробовали во время «самоизоляции» систему слежки и контроля.

И, конечно, — дело Прокопьевой. В России журналистом быть непросто: тебя могут убить, похитить, избить арматурой, могут подбросить наркотики или сломать руку (тоже, кстати, в этом году), но, кажется, еще никогда журналиста в России не сажали в колонию за его непосредственную профессиональную деятельность. За колонку, за мнение, за слова.

Нельзя никого судить за слова. И тут неважно, шесть лет колонии даст судья или год условно. Это удар по профессии, это удар по каждому из нас, по всем, кто живет в России — и хочет делать это и дальше.

Потому что после обвинительного приговора Прокопьевой рано или поздно вся журналистика в России превратится в шоу «Соловьев LIVE».

Светлана Прокопьева должна быть свободна, ее дело — прекращено.
