Deputy Rashkin sued the ECHR for compensation for a claim from Volodin, who was offended by criticism at a rally

The ECHR awarded communist deputy Valery Rashkin 7,800 thousand euros in compensation due to the claim of State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin for the protection of honor and dignity. This was announced by the head of the human rights group “Agora” Pavel Chikov. The decision was published on the court's website.

Volodin sued Rashkin for 1 million rubles because of his speech at a rally in 2009. Then the communist accused his opponent of “crimes against the people, before the Russian nation . ”

The ECHR decided that Russia violated Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (freedom of expression) and sided with Rashkin.

“It is interesting that the case was decided in favor of Rashkin by a vote of four to three with three dissenting opinions, including judge Dmitry Dedov from Russia (they argued and swayed),” Chikov noted.
