In 2013, the reader of samizdat Leonid Titarenko barely got out of bed and could not tie the laces without pain. After a couple of days, almost the whole body paralyzed him. The next seven years, Lenya traveled from the center to the rehabilitation center, went through hundreds of procedures and got acquainted with each of the chamber neighbors. In the new same story, we tell who and why sits in Russian wheelchairs.
- Maybe not? - I looked at the local boys jumping from the pier to the shallow river of the Logolol. Two of them just climbed ashore to accelerate properly, when I met with them and sternly rushed with a finger.
This used to be associated with me in the summer, beach and youthful alcoholism. Now I was sitting in a wheelchair, for several years already having lost the opportunity to walk, and what was happening was a bad joke. At the recreation center “Two Rivers” I was because of my friend’s wedding. While the young were photographed on the picturesque shore, I went to examine the surroundings and stumbled upon other vacationers.
When I see how someone is starting from the pier, bridge or branches, I can imagine how it lands on the operating table. The spine of the brook, but this is half a bastard. It’s bad that he suddenly breaks. And in order to become a disabled person in one crunch, you do not need to lead a particularly traumatic lifestyle. In principle, you can not leave the house at all.
The divers laughed and continued to pull fate for the cervical vertebrae. And once again I thought that I was in the chair in the most mediocre way.

My name is Lenya, I am 33 years old. Six years ago, I worked as an editor in the Belgorod “Useful Gazeta”. Once, having passed the next, not the most exciting, note and returning from work, I felt unpleasant sensations in my back. And in the morning I could barely get out of bed and tie the laces.
Each step suddenly began to surrender to pain, like a mermaid. For a week I tried to achieve hospitalization, took tests, lay and tried to move less. And then it turned out that I had myelitis - inflammation of the bone marrow, which quickly spread throughout the body. Just the day before the disease was supposed to affect the brain, they finally made a correct diagnosis and managed to urgently operate.
The first few months after the emergency operation, I woke up with the feeling that I had dreamed. Now I’ll get up, wash myself and sit for breakfast for a computer, tuning in to go to work. Even after the morning shower-wiping with a wet sponge-I retained the status quo "right now will pass."
Doctors only fed my optimism: “Everyone has differently! There is no rupture of the spinal cord, fingers react to injections. Legs can move at any moment! "
So for three months in the hospital and six months I waited for the house to leave the disability group No. 1 on my two. And in general, as the old woman says in the topic, celebrating the 80th anniversary, this is just a figure!
In the third month, one hand stirred in my hospital. Then the second. The right one completely came to life, the left fingers could not clench into a fist. The progress stopped at this.
After the hospital, I was sent to the rehabilitation center, then another one, and more. For five years, dozens of patients with fractures of fate of varying severity passed through me as a neighbor in the ward. And the dramas of jumpers in the river, perhaps the most tearful. After all, this is always an active young man in the prime of plans for the future.
I observed lying all ages and stages - from denial to adoption. Someone’s injury is not a couple of months. And someone was already a seasoned “neck” or “spinal” and taught the wisdom of life “after”. Such as, for example, Vadik. It was he who made me a real disabled person.
A 30-year-old resident of Donetsk nine years ago entered the bottom. Its nerves were stronger than the neck, and, despite the irreversible paresis of the limbs, Vadik extended confidence and almost pride in involvement in the para-bunch.
From the first minutes of the meeting, the pilot of an expensive electric car radiated an indefatigable craving for communication and, as he knew, positive:
- This year only? I also thought at first that I would get up soon! But you are not afraid, you’ll get used to it, ”the neighbor reassured. - Welcome to the club! Do you drive in Uriki?
- What? I did not hear.
But, as it turned out, I drive. Sopalatnik enlightened that Uriki is a resort, with which many paralyzed are urinated. Like me then. A deep sigh was heard from my bunk. Attractions in a kind of para-salting immediately made me in a party. You can use my URIDERSIVITIES TOMALIARY - until it heals, but “drive in Uriki” - this is forever. That day I became disabled.
Vadik was the first stroller that I met during the first rehabilitation. I learned from him about the division depending on the place of the fracture into the “neck” and the “spinalists”, that all “neck” does not work with fingers, and that the main thing for the lying is to save their ass: “Learning is a matter of this.” But the main thing is that Vadik to the bones of the bone understood me in the fact that unjustness is a smaller part of the inconvenience of the stroller.
You see, in the interval from the legs to the injury (in my case, inflammation) of the spinal cord is a lot of useful. And all this is almost not sensitive and works on its own.
And also the stroller does not have a single unnecessary body system - a controversial privilege.
The first two years after the fracture, Vadik lay with real estate legs and hands, until the tip of the nose began to correspond with Tanya. She was not one of those tan who say: “You will get up, I believe in you! Okay, I have to go, ”and one of those who silently come to live together. Mutual love inspired him for stubborn training, and soon Vadik was able to sit, and his hands were almost completely restored - except for the stiff fingers.
Here was the very story of Konstantin Valyakin , Valery Zarytovsky here was the story of the reader of Samizdat, who, after the accident, lost his legs, family and friends and remained with hatred of humanity and father's carbine
Tanya, who lived with us in the ward, I admired daily. Okay, marry the stroller, but with Vadik! With the first rays of the mocking December sun, I woke up from the cooing of my lover:
- Fuck, you are stupid pussy! How did you fuck me already! Once again, you will give a mug from me - take it!
- Vadik, I'm sorry!
- Dry me your "sorry"! The cow is unknown! Oh Lonchik! Good morning!
Vadik behaved as if the doctors promised that each insult against Tanya was automatically restored by one neuron of the spinal cord. But if it were true, Vadim would have been running for a long time, and only it remained only to facilitate his fate, taking out a claim to his wife to the world of healthy people.
Tanya, over the years, has clearly developed immunity. If the words of her spouse were sad, then only by the fact that he has a bad mood. She lived not by herself, but by Vadik. He was her daring Tamagochi, the departure and attention to which became her mission. Moreover, in the rare moments of peace, Vadik went into a marriage susykan. This spoon of honey helped Tanya call their marriage happy.
That rehabilitation center was in Slavyansk, where a war came in a couple of months. It was a picturesque place, primarily because of the contingent.
Soon after dinner, the taggling of strollers in the corridor became louder until their drivers drove into our ward. She was the epicenter of the core thanks to the spiritual Vadik. Also, the proximity of the alkomarket and the humane medical staff also contributed.
Three or four men surrounded the table, covered with backgammon, while Tanya cut a snack. I, as a notorious introvert, was sitting on the bed behind a laptop and embarrassed the company with self -sufficiency. I came to be treated without an accompanying person, and therefore could not transfer to a stroller and join. And, to be honest, I didn't want to.
- Well, sho, Gray, how many grates stung? - Vadik met the guests.
-Yes, a nurse in the procedure, and with Oksanka from the 204th almost a couch was not broken ...
“Sho-t is weak,” the next guest opened the door with a thunder to the foot of the stroller. - And Palych and I ski rode all day.
I listened to their conversations, giggled from under the glasses and no, no, and I recorded that there was something to tell my friends. Then I still did not know that Self -irony was an obligatory feature of all self -respecting disabled person. It's not only about jokes among their own. Is it possible to be offended by healthy poor fellows who are not familiar with the joy of shaving from below, knowing that then he will not be injected?
By and large, in jokes about the disabled as such there is nothing offensive. If only a comedian did not set a goal to offend and humiliate. Yes, you can’t laugh at the patients, but there would be a mouth over the disease. Sloding avoidance of jokes is much more offensive. Like, of course, I want to joke about disability, but, since I consider it wretched, I will say nothing out of pity.
The tragedy always causes interest, dissonance, fear and as a protective reaction of the body - laughter. This is fine. The authors of likes under the memes about coronavirus will not allow to lie. We repel like a laughter from ourselves.
One evening, the company in the ward began to share stories about who and how ended up in a wheelchair.
“I somehow climbed on an apricot,” one of the men began. - I scored two buckets, I think to send out, and my mother yells from below: “There are still big there!” I hung a bucket on a branch, climbed the second higher, well, and ... I cut the fifth year now in a stroller.
- Do not drive! - almost jumped up another. - Count, I also broke my neck, only flew from the pear!
Both smiled sadly coincidence, and one of them summed up: “We knew, where we fell,” they put the hay bast! ”
“And I fell from the roof to the haystack,” the third grabbed. - Only in it there were pitchfork.
The ward froze in ice silence. The men paid tribute to Satan’s humor to a sense of humor and drank without clinking.

A paralyzed person outwardly looks like a healthy one. So I want to come up and in a boss one “Come on, what are you” to dissuade.
Yes, patients with gastritis and depression are also not covered with scabs. But everyone can imagine the pain in the abdomen or the desire to dodge the window from the window. But what is it like to have legs and not be able to move them? The closest sensations for paralysis generously gives us a fucked -up hand. The limb is like a stranger that when touching, in management. Waking up with a disabled person means not to feel their legs in space, not to understand in what position they are. There is warmth, even, it seems, the muscles strain and get tired, but everything is to no avail. As if you were in the armor nailed to the bed. It's a shame. But it does not hurt.
The next point of my rehabilitation biography was the Moscow Overcoming Moscow Center. From there, people returned disabled for 300 thousand rubles a month. True, well -being. For that kind of money, I expected to at least learn to walk in my own free will.
The center was luxurious: a pool, spinach soup for lunch, a Sunday travel to the cinema and on each bed, the call button of a young orderlide with medical education. It is not surprising that half of the customers of the center are disabled people who bought a residence permit in the capital, just to have a quota for free rehabilitation once a year in this “overcoming”.
In “overcoming”, as in any such center, no one promises recovery. But it is quite possible to develop your hands, learn how to hold your back and subtract the shallowed systems of the body there. And this is not counting the resort conditions and the company of “like -minded people”. For all this, there is a complex of simulators and procedures. Both useful and doubtful. Every morning I had a lesson in "social adaptation." At the sessions for 40 minutes, the instructor went out with me into the yard and waited for me to go over the center of the center. Then we returned to the office, she poured multi -colored balls in front of me on the table - and until the end of the lesson I sorted them, developing motor skills. There they showed me how to sit on a shirt and cut a carrot planted on the pin.
Everything would be fine if not for the nuance. One lesson in "social adaptation" cost 1200 rubles. Looking at the price, you will think once again whether it is worth being a disabled person at all. And do not even ask how much the individual training in the pool cost.
“Total 302 thousand rubles,” the chief physician voiced the amount, as if it were necessary before the discharge. I could not escape, and he got what he wanted.

Oasis of satisfied paralytics. About 50 patients - and everyone feels “like that”. Here, almost no one spoke about his misfortune, and if he spoke, then rather as a reason to start a second life. That summer, the Paralympic Rugby team was rehabilitated there - my peers. They scurried around the corridors in “Actures” - compact strollers almost without a back. Always positive, polite and friendly. The one who says that all the disabled people are evil, they would pushed into the trunk, took them into the forest and treated them with a barbecue.
I remember swinging to the procedure. Well, how to swing - I trudge, as if, playing a crocodile, I show the karakatitsa. Slowly, puffing. The floor is mocking: barely crawls under the wheels. I’m not particularly mobile in a stroller: on my left hand, my fingers do not bend. The palm slides on the wheel, it inserts to the wall. Mats, corns. At such moments, it seemed to me that they were watching me on a hidden cell, and just in case I tried to stay with dignity, convincing the emptiness of the corridor that I enjoy riding.
There were five doors to the desired office, as I heard behind the rustling of assets. There were two pursuers. Having struck me, one asked: "What are you?" - And, picked up for the armrests, I rushed to the procedural. The assistants rinked silently, and I remained to flow later and with thanks.
For that month I met a dozen stroller and stroller. Their entire character and way of thought is the anthem of happiness to live.
A healthy person perceives a new day for granted, takes it, as they take money from the nightstand of the major or the container. But it is worth a resuscitation machine to take it out of the comfort zone to the trash, it is a miracle to survive, but to lose everything except the mind - as the world becomes different. And then those for whom the brain is so important is more important than the spinal cord, live a new, but no less complete hormones for joy in life. The life, where the remaining sources of pleasure is more valuable, and therefore these pleasures become much more acute. As a result: the very fact of the opportunity to wake up, communicate, think and know the world is a daily buzz.
The list of recovery centers in Russia is scanty - like a chance to recover in them. But I approached the choice of the next responsibly. I watched photos and videos, read reviews. I especially remember the impressions of a woman about one chief physician.
“During working hours, Dr. Martynov drinks cognac in small doses. Ilya Valerievich leads a sexually dissolved lifestyle. He meets women on different dating sites. Martynov powders every new acquaintance with a penetrating voice of a professional psychiatrist, promises golden mountains, then sleeps with her a couple of times - and throws it. Ilya Valerievich is engaged in sex without a condom.
Think before dealing with this person! "
I thought and two weeks later I arrived at the Voronezh Center for Restorative Medicine "Alternative +".
What does not kill, does not always do it stronger. And after six rehabilitation courses in Voronezh, I know this for sure. It was there that I stopped wondering. The first day gave me an idea where I got.
All Sunday I was in the room alone. He sat and tried to put the headphone in the ear as deep as possible so as not to hear the crazy uterine howl behind the wall. He was published by 25-year-old Elena. Six months ago, her husband went to watch by the builder; While the wife was not there, Elena decided to arrange a surprise for him and lose weight to his arrival.
A girlfriend advised the tablets "Reduxin". They suppress appetite, and if they are consumed in unlimited quantities, they also allow them to fall into a glycemic one. What Elena did. On the second day after her husband arrived, she collapsed to the floor, and the doctors noted the sugar level of 0.4 with a norm of 3 to 5 millimols. She spent two months in a coma, but woke up. The vegetative state of the 27-kilogram mummy was supplemented by an endless orm.
How I was traveling in the same compartment with half a sulmur of Aim Muhamedzhan , Konstantin Valyakin , Yaroslav Kirsanov cup of cold tea, a half of the cookies and 11 injections. The same story about a trip to a compartment that teaches to wait for death and enjoy the road
The care of his wife and two children was taken by the husband, who was afraid that in life he did not criticize his wife’s figure, reinforcing the phrase “ideal forms” with the buyer’s gestures in a bread shop.
In Voronezh, I decided to stay for three whole weeks. Let the conditions resembled a refugee camp after the Moscow Center, but as for treatment, my respect. The fact is that Dr. Martynov purchased the most modern and necessary for rehabilitation simulators, some were better than Moscow. And they were the same, but the procedures were exactly three times cheaper. As a result, my three -week course cost 80 thousand. Since that winter, I began to go to Voronezh every six months.
Acquaintance with the head physician himself turned out to be short, but spectacular. The next morning he came to me, shook his hand and sternly asked: "Is there a dick?" I found that he did not mean the moment, and answered in the affirmative. "Well, then we’ll put it on our feet!"
How I got into a double isolation in a mental hospital and Rita Bondar survived, Semyon Sheshenin , Nastya Lobova orderly, losing her mind, full of information vacuum, patients with exacerbations due to mass panic and other features of quarantine in a mental hospital
Very.
Like everything else.
I thought.
