“The investigating authorities of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Volgograd Region based on the results of a procedural audit and study of archival materials about mass murders of civilians during the Great Patriotic War in the territory of the Stalingrad Region (now the Volgograd region) opened a criminal case under the signs of a crime under Art. 357 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Genocide"), - according to the document.

According to the IC, in the territory of modern Volgograd and the region there are at least 15 seats with burials of about 1800 civilians of Stalingrad, who were killed "with particular cruelty of the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War."

“Investigative actions are carried out aimed at establishing specific persons involved in the extermination of civilians,” the UK reports. The department plans to excavate in places with burials in order to identify the individuals of the dead. The military, the Ministry of Emergencies and search units will be involved in the excavations.
