In Turkey, the future of St. Sophia was determined

Today, July 10, the State Council of Turkey canceled the decree of the government of the country of 1934, in accordance with which the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Istanbul became the museum.

According to TASS with reference to CNN Turk , now the Turkish authorities have received a legal opportunity to turn the Cathedral of St. Sophia into a mosque. When exactly this can happen, has not yet been reported.

The order to work out the issue of changing the status of the cathedral was given by Turkey President Tayyip Erdogan at a meeting of the Main Council of the Party of Justice and Development, which he heads.

On July 2, a meeting of the State Council of Turkey was held on the possible change in the status of the Cathedral of St. Sophia. The discussion lasted 17 minutes.

The Cathedral of St. Sophia was built in 532–537 at the direction of Emperor Justinian, for more than a thousand years he remained the largest temple of the Christian world. After the fall of Byzantium in 1453, the cathedral was turned into a mosque.

In 1935, according to the decree of the Turkish government, signed by the founder of the modern Turkish state, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Aiya-Sofia mosque became a museum , and the mosaic and the mosaic were cleaned with the layers of plaster. In 1985, the building was included in the number of UNESCO World Heritage Monuments.
