Almost 3 million Russians (4.1% of the total population) in 2019 worked outside the region of residence, RBC reports with reference to the Rosstat data on domestic labor migration for last year.
According to the publication, the number of Russians, employed not in their native places, has decreased for the first time since 2014, when a slight decline was observed - until this year and after the domestic migration grew sequentially.
The leaders in the outflow of the working population are the Moscow and Leningrad regions. So, every fifth resident of the Moscow Region (822 thousand people) worked in another region. For the Leningrad region, this share is 18.3% (170.5 thousand people). The following are the Republic of Adygea, in which 16.4% of the working population went to work beyond its borders, Chuvashia with 13.8% of employees and Kalmykia with 12.9%.
In May, the analysts of the Moody's rating agency predicted that the deterioration of the situation in the Russian economy due to the pandemic of coronavirus and the collapse of oil prices will lead to the acceleration of domestic-Russian migration in the next two years. Because of this, the Russians will strive for large economic centers, and less developed regions will face a long-term drop in income and a slowdown in economic development.
