The arrested governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, does not know that rallies are being held in Khabarovsk in his support. Representative of the Public Monitoring Commission (POC) of Moscow, Eva Merkacheva, reported this to TASS after visiting Furgal in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center.

“Furgal doesn’t know anything about the protests in Khabarovsk, his TV doesn’t work, we were forbidden to talk [about the rallies],” Merkacheva told TASS. Members of the PMC “are not allowed to ask about this,” she clarified in a conversation with RIA Novosti.

In a comment to Interfax , Merkacheva added that Furgal is alone in the cell. His TV does not work due to the lack of an antenna, he has not yet received any broadcasts, he was only given books and newspapers for July 9.

Sergei Furgal was arrested on July 9. He is accused of involvement in organizing assassinations and murders of entrepreneurs in the Khabarovsk Territory and Amur Region in 2004-2005. Furgal denies any guilt.
Since July 11, rallies in support of Furgal have been held in Khabarovsk. The first of them was attended by tens of thousands of people, it became the largest in the history of the city. Khabarovsk Mayor Sergei Kravchuk said that “such rallies are not needed in the city,” as they are illegal and increase the risk of spreading the coronavirus.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet signed a decree on the resignation of Sergei Furgal and the appointment of an interim head of the Khabarovsk Territory. According to Kommersant, this could happen before July 16.
