The US government will pay $1.95 billion to manufacture and ship 100 million doses of the future coronavirus vaccine being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, provided the drug is safe and effective.
The US Department of Health said that US residents will receive the vaccine for free after successful trials and obtaining a license. Pfizer will deliver the drug to government designated locations. The agency stressed that under an agreement with the company, the United States can buy another 500 million doses.
The day before, the German biotech company BioNTech and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced the successful results of additional trials of an experimental coronavirus vaccine.
On the news of the US vaccine purchase, Pfizer shares rose more than 4%, while BioNTech rose 6%. Prior to this, the UK announced an agreement to receive 30 million doses of an experimental BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine.
