Report of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in St. Petersburg for the second quarter of 2020

The branch of the IOO “Big Brothers Big Sisters” in St. Petersburg is part of the international program Big Brothers Big Sisters International, one of the most effective individual mentoring programs for children in need of support.

Despite the Organization’s complete transition to remote work due to the pandemic, the recruitment of volunteers has not stopped. Online training for future mentors was also organized, and online acquaintance between “Seniors” and “Youngers” continued. Thus, in the second quarter of 2020, the branch of the Big Brothers Big Sisters IPO in St. Petersburg received 31 applications from potential volunteer mentors. 23 people were interviewed and ready to join the program and become mentors. During this period, 5 new pairs “Senior - Junior” were created .

In St. Petersburg, the Organization works with 7 orphanages . And despite the fact that all of them are closed for quarantine, current requests from orphanages for the necessary support were collected weekly. 4 institutions requested tea, sugar, and sweets for tea , the consumption of which has increased significantly due to isolation. Thanks to the well-organized work of curators, as well as the help of volunteers, it was possible to provide orphanages with the necessary food products.

On April 7, the first online resource meeting took place with the mentors of the program, and everyone was convinced that neither quarantine, nor crisis, nor distances are an obstacle to the sincere friendship of mentors and children in orphanages! The meeting was also joined by representatives of CSSV No. 12 and CSSV No. 6, who were very pleased to talk about how things are going in institutions, how online learning is being set up, what children do in their free time, and what opportunities to communicate with mentors are possible during quarantine.

Also, the curators of the program organized an event aimed at developing eco-habits among the wards and diversified the children’s everyday life . They were contactlessly given wonderful spruce trees, shrubs and flower seedlings to the orphanage, and the “Youngers”, under the strict guidance of their teachers, began landscaping the local area.

Dissemination of expertise is one of the most important areas of work . Being the only specialized foundation in the Russian Federation in the field of individual mentoring for children, the Organization is interested in seeing this technology develop throughout the country. For example, the team conducted an online training webinar “Mentoring in Families” for the team of the Our Children Charitable Foundation in the city of Ufa .

In the second quarter of 2020, we managed to collect 50,998 rubles for the work of a branch of the Organization . Some of them - 46,314 rubles - are small monthly donations . Such donations help the Organization plan its work months in advance. Once a month they are debited from your bank card.
