Twitter began labeling government-linked media accounts

Twitter has begun labeling media accounts that are directly or indirectly associated with the state, writes Bloomberg. RT, TASS and RIA Novosti have already received such a mark.

In addition to the media and journalists, the labels will be placed on accounts belonging to "key government officials." The new rules already apply to accounts from Russia, the US, the UK, China, and France. In the case when the media receives money from the state, but has its own editorial policy, there will be no mark. For example, like the BBC in the UK and NPR in the US.

“We think this is an important step: when people see an account that discusses the geopolitical issues of other countries. This way they will understand the nationality of the account and will be more aware of who the pages represent,” the company said.

At the same time, Twitter emphasizes that it will not recommend reading or promote accounts and tweets with state media tags.
