The Supreme Court of Bashkortostan declared the 8-day arrest of the leader of the Kushtau Live movement, Fail Alsynov, illegal. Znak.com reports this. Alsynov was detained on August 15, when the camp of defenders of the Kushtau Shikhan was dispersed by riot police and employees of the Bashkir Soda Company private security company.
Alsynov’s lawyer added that the court also declared the arrest of several other detainees during the dispersal of the activist camp illegal.
- On August 15, more than 70 people were detained near the Kushtau defenders’ camp. Those detained were sentenced to administrative arrests and fines.
- Shikhan Kushtau is a small mountain in the Ishimbay region of Bashkortostan. Local activists have been fighting for several months against deforestation for the development of soda and limestone deposits in the territory of Kushtau. Starting in August, work in the protected natural area resumed . Activists advocate the preservation of natural monuments, the remaining shikhans of Toratau, Kushtau, Yuraktau. The previously existing shihan of Shakhtau was completely destroyed to obtain raw materials by the Bashkir Soda Company.
