Red caviar may rise in price by 20–60%

Wholesale suppliers of red caviar have reported a 20-60% increase in prices for caviar, reports Kommersant , citing sources in retail chains. This year's salmon catch was the worst since 2014.

Unsuccessful season of salmon in the Far East threatens to rise in price of caviar. In addition, the price will be affected by an increase in the costs of fishermen: for materials and equipment, as well as the salaries of workers who were in quarantine. As Ilya Bereznyuk told Agro & Food Communications, in the summer of 2019 pink salmon caviar cost about 2,300 rubles per kg, now the price can reach 3,000 rubles. The second interlocutor said that the wholesale price of caviar would rise to 3,300 rubles.

In the Kamchatka Territory, the catch decreased by 54%, to 173 thousand tons, and in the Sakhalin Region - by 39%, the publication found out.

According to the Federal Agency for Fishery, as of August 17, 220 thousand tons of Pacific salmon were caught in Russia - 49% less than two years ago in the same period. For the whole of 2020, 17 thousand tons can be produced. This is 25-30% lower than last year. However, there will be no severe shortage of caviar, Alexander Fomin, executive director of the Association of Production and Trade Enterprises of the Fish Market, shared with the publication.

There has not been such a low salmon catch since 2014 (176,000 tons), Alexander Efremov, managing director of Dobroflot, a large producer of canned fish, told Kommersant.
