The theoretical physicist Igor Ivanov told Jan Mahonin about his educational activities and summer schools in the physics of elementary particles and related topics in Lake Baikal and Kamchatka.
- You are actively engaged in the popularization of science - you explain, criticize, correct ... Which of these roles suits you the most?
- Let's first say why I am engaged in popularization. So it happened initially: when I myself studied physics, I wanted to tell others about it. For me, this was an integral part of physical education-not just passively listening, but also retelling in other words, trying to put up information in a new way. I saw that ordinary people - not scientists, not students - are also interested in physics, they also want to know about the world around them. And I began to tell them about it. And when the Internet appeared, I liked that I can tell all this to a wide circle of people who are very far away. When I started, I had a lot of free time, so I was happy to answer all kinds of questions and did not particularly criticize anyone. Then the format of my popular science activity changed-I began to write popular science news myself, primarily online. And I saw how other people write, in particular non -core journalists in ordinary media. I saw how much sometimes everything is distorted. Therefore, in addition to my own texts, I began to write and criticism, and sometimes detailed analysis of what was wrong in other people's news.
- How much time do you devote such a critical activity?
- In fact, criticism of other people's mistakes is not the activity in the field of popularization that I want to do. There are people who specially analyze the wrong news and allegations of other people in detail. So, of course, you can also do it. But I understand: the time that I can spend on popularization is limited - this is not my main activity, but I am engaged in science. Therefore, at some point, I decided that it was better to spend the same time not to analyze other people's texts, but on writing my own news. And so it lasts twenty years. I have been working online since 1999.
- But still - there are such moments when you come across in public space with such meaningless theories that you cannot restrain yourself, not comment?
- Certainly. But I try to avoid disputes. I just understand that with stubborn supporters of pseudoscience do not argue. I am often written by adherents of pseudoscientific statements, alternative theories of how the world is arranged, etc. They ask me to make out, criticize their work. I just don't answer anything to them. At some point, I realized that time would disappear, but this would not help anything, I could not convince them.
- Sometimes in your texts you go to the general philosophical level. How, in your opinion, are natural sciences and philosophy connected?
- I try to talk about scientific matters and not go into philosophy. It seems to me wrong, this is not my field of activity.
- I do not mean a systematic philosophy. Philosophy is also an attempt to earn the trust of minds ...
- It happens that I set out my point of view on different more general points, because people sometimes want to know how scientists think about this or that. And if I think I have the right to express my point of view on a specific question, I will express it.
Philosophy is a style of thinking. Physics is the science of an objective world. These are different things that can be developed independently from each other. You can not think about philosophy at all when you are engaged in physics. You can not think about the world around you if you are engaged in philosophy. I prefer to engage in the surrounding world. And if I sometimes need to draw any generalizing conclusions, then I draw them, but I try not to delve into it.
- But in classical times, science and philosophy coexisted. Aristotle tried to theoretically substantiate the existence of atoms ...
- Yes, but since then science has developed significantly. People realized that to clarify objective laws there is no need to just sit and talk about the world around him. It is necessary to put experiments and describe them mathematically. This is the difference compared to classical times. Then they thought: if the reasoning looks believable, you comprehended the truth. But in fact, this is not so.
- You can explain what are your methods of explaining complex things in an accessible form?
- I'll try. When a person says “I don’t understand”, he can put different meaning in these words. The most catastrophic situation is when it was formulated by some kind of statement by such complex words that he did not even realize how different parts of the statements are related to each other, where the prerequisite is, where is the argument and where is the conclusion. But there is another option: the statement in principle is understandable, but it is so diverging that a person knew before, that he lost a connecting thread with all his baggage of knowledge. He does not know what to believe. Or it can happen like this: a person understands the statement, but it seems to him to be banal irritation, he does not feel that it is so interesting in him that he must be so specially emphasized. In general, there can be a lot of forms of misunderstanding. Moreover, different people can not understand the same non-trivial thought differently. So, the task of the explanatory is to understand what exactly this particular interlocutor was not clear to return a few steps back to the moment when he was still clear, and to accompany him until the end of this thought. When I see that a person does not understand something, but wants to understand, I perceive it as a challenge, as an intellectual task, and I strive to deal with it.
- Do you see your duty in educational work? What pushes you to a feat?
-Firstly, as I already said, I do not want to limit myself to the fact that I get an education myself, I want to refine it and transfer it to others. Well, the second - I myself am an extrovert, I'm emotional, and I like to see the response of other people. I am pleasure when I see that children or the general public suddenly become clear what they had not understood before. But at the same time, I do not think that I am directly obliged to popularize, that it is destined for me, that this is my fatal need. Each person chooses himself what he likes, what he should do. Popularization for me is an activity that, on the one hand, is useful, and on the other, it brings me pleasure. But this is still not my main job.
- Theorists are looking for stability island, experimenters synthesize new chemical elements. The question may arise: why all this? Is there a game moment here?
- Such a moment can be found everywhere. So yes, he is. Here I would have to tell in detail what part of this activity is a utopian moment, which is a game ... look: we want to understand how the world works, how it works. Around us, of course, there are many interesting phenomena. But these phenomena are not always justified by fundamental reasons. I will reject a little aside. There is linguistics. There are many interesting languages that have curious features of pronunciation, vocabulary, etymology. It is all very interesting to study, because you can find out about how the language was formed and how the nations were formed. But we can always ask: why in this language it is precisely such a system of conjugation? Could it turn out differently? Yes, in principle it could. We can ask similar questions about the world around him: for example, could it happen that the ground has two moon? Yes, in principle it could, but it did not work out. This is not a fundamental law. There is no such physical law that would forbid planets to have two satellites. This is a situational result. So it happened in this particular situation. However, there are a lot of things in the world around us, about which we ask: "Could it turn out differently?" - And, after conducting research, we answer: no. That is, really something sewn in the device of the microworld prohibits alternative options. A certain physical law from which a variety of phenomena arise that function only in this way, not otherwise. Such laws have consequences, we can dig up, study these consequences, then we even figure out how to use them in practice, but initially it all starts with the soul that is chilling the soul that in this particular aspect the world should be so and only like that, and not to some other. This feeling is fascinating. And many are engaged in real, deep physics precisely because they want to touch the source code of the universe. Then this can be interpreted as a game, as a utopia. But there is an initial motive why it is so interesting for us to study all this.
- What can the search for the island of stability lead to?
-This is in a sense a fundamental question is also. Could atomic nuclei turn out somehow differently? Not really. It is necessary to completely change our surrounding world so that nuclear physics becomes different. At the island of stability, if they find it, of course, practical application can be found. If very stable elements suddenly turn out to be there, they can be synthesized, accumulated, and an exotic superheavy substance with unusual properties. But this is rather utopia - most physicists think that they are not absolutely stable, but metastable. Nevertheless, studying them, you can also extract information about how strong interactions are arranged, and from here new, more convenient approaches to understanding the device and ordinary nuclei, and their transformations.
-And at the same time, see the image somewhere far away of the flickering island of stability ... a certain utopia ...
- Well, yes. At some stage, physical research may be utopian. We study what was in the early universe in the first fraction of a second after a large explosion. How can we, in principle, feel this? It was all so long ago. Since then, the whole universe has changed. But it turns out that there are things that have not changed since then, have not disappeared, we can, relatively speaking, feel. More recently, we learned to capture gravitational waves. In the 2030s, we will launch satellites into space and with their help we can begin to detect gravitational waves with a large period that appeared in a completely early universe. Then, after a tiny fraction of a second after the big explosion, a catastrophic restructuring of the vacuum, a sort of additional explosion, a kind of boiling of the vacuum could happen. Gravitational waves that could then form, still fly throughout the universe, they are waiting for us to register them. Now we cannot still feel them, modern technologies are not enough. But we are already close to this. And when we learn to catch those ancient gravitational waves that still fill our universe, everything that seemed utopias a decade ago will become a fact.
-As for the utopias of social ... Dubna-it does not seem to you that it still remains in it from the utopian project of the sixties or even, indirectly, the twenties? I mean not only science, but also social relations ...
- In Dubna, some enthusiasm is felt. Of course, we are in Russia, where there are different difficulties, but here, in Dubna, despite all this, people are happy to do the common thing. They do not alone, but see other sincerely interested people around them and understand: yes, this is the activity that should be done. In me in Dubna, there is a feeling that in terms of science and human relations, the local atmosphere differs from most Russian cities.
- In history there are many examples of scientists who were engaged in politics: Andrey Sakharov, Sergey Kovalev ... Are you interested in politics?
- Science is people. Each person, in addition to scientific activity, has political views. Someone has religious. If it is important for a person to do anything other than science, move some social phenomenon, then he, of course, moves him. I am interested in politics to the extent to keep my hand on the pulse, to understand what processes around are taking place. I do not actively engage in politics, I do not enter into any parties, I do not participate in any meetings. But I have a clear point of view about the phenomena that occur around us.
-Dubna in this sense looks quite actively, in comparison with the rest of Russia, a more or less free atmosphere reigns here. Only recently there have been petitions against the garbage training ground and against the participation of the Russian Guard in the protection of the institute ...
- Russia is heterogeneous. There are other places in which they argue with the authorities. In this, Dubna does not differ much from other centers of intellectual life in Russia. But in general - yes, this is a sweet, peculiar place. You know, I have never worked in Dubna on an ongoing basis, I have always been traveling here. He performed at conferences, at seminars, interacted with people, I organize events with them, but I was constantly here. I want to maintain ties with oak. I really like how everything works here, and it seems to me that Dubna, at least in the next decades, has big prospects.
- Let's talk about the big Adron Collider. You talk about it to the general public, lead a special section on the portal "Elements". According to your words, the launch of the LNC changed the parameters of European life. What do you mean?
- This is not due to the collider himself as a scientific attitude, but with some change in the general policy of Cern in the last ten years. They understand: in order to maintain this project, it is necessary not only financing and scientific results. People - the most ordinary, not scientists - should also understand what exactly we are doing, why we are doing this and where we want to move on. And when this point of view began to prevail in Cern, the laboratory began to spend noticeable funds on popularization, educational programs and just a story about what role CERN plays in scientific and social European life. Do not forget that scientific research is still a way out of fundamentally new technologies. And all this must be told to the general public so that it understands that LHC is not a thing in itself, but a real part of a wide campaign to study nature, and this campaign in general is a very useful undertaking.
- LHC can play the role of social binding power in Europe, contribute to civilizational unity like environmental initiatives?
- Rather, Cern and fundamental physics as a whole, and not LHC is single -handed. On the one hand, in modern society, many people have an excess of free time. This, in fact, is a luxury - to be able not to chase all the time for achievements, but to think about the world around us, about society and its development, about how to develop further to society. Many people want to attach their mind, energy, strength to something to do something useful. In the end, parents think about where to give children to study, what children will do when they grow up. For people who want to contribute to the development of society, there are many areas of activity: political initiatives, environmental movements, etc. An increase in the prestige of scientific research is one of them.
Cern, as a European representative of one of the large areas of physics, wants to convey to the public the idea that engaging in a fundamental science, and in particular the physics of the microworld, is cool, interesting, useful. But Cern also understands that other directions are also interesting and useful, so he has to compete in a friendly manner with other centers. If we do something and want to do it well, we understand that people are needed for this, and people need to be found, involved, light up. And this is especially important for projects of a giant scale, such as LHC. The desire to involve as many people as possible, rally around LHC those who are interested in physicist was one of the reasons why Cern began to adhere to the policy of maximum openness to the outside world.
- Does this approach remain relevant today, when everything is closed and isolated?
- The last two years in the physics of particles there has been a wide campaign to update the development strategy of the microworld, not only in the near future, but also in the long term. A few months ago, the main priorities for the future were formulated: not only to squeeze the maximum scientific information from LHC, but also to begin detailed development of a new collider, even more powerful and more perspicacious. (See Igor Ivanov’s article on the European strategy in the physics of elementary particles [ 1 ] and the addition to it [ 2 ]. - Ed. ) But any such project will require large resources, and more and more doubts are expressed that these costs are justified. Therefore, in the coming years, both Ceren and the entire physics of particles will be faced with the task of explaining both the general public and the representatives of other areas of science, the justification of these efforts and costs.
- Dubna can go in this direction - to play the role of an intellectually binding environment?
- Maybe, of course. But it depends on the decisions of the leadership, but I do not know what their plans are.

I constantly ride.
