The European Parliament (EP) adopted a resolution in which he demanded to impose sanctions against Belarusian officials, including President Alexander Lukashenko. "For" 574 people voted, against - 37, abstained - 82. The resolution published on the website of the European Parliament is advisory.
The document says that the European Parliament "decisively supports the EU sanctions against the persons responsible for falsifying the results of elections and repression in Belarus, including Alexander Lukashenko." The BEP also calls on to consider the possibility of including Russian citizens who support the regime in Belarus in the sanctions list.
According to the position of the European Parliament, the elections in Belarus are not considered to be held, "given that they have passed with egregious violations of all international norms." Therefore, Alexander Lukashenko is not recognized as president after the end of his current period, which expires on November 5, 2020. The European Parliament maintains a peaceful transfer of power, demands to terminate violence and repression and hold new elections under international supervision. The support of workers and trade unions is also expressed.
The document also supported the activities of the Coordinating Council of the opposition, headed by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. At the same time, the European Parliament did not call the Tikhanov’s elected president of Belarus, but in the text of the resolution it is noted that “many Belarusians” consider it the winner of the presidential election and the elected president of Belarus, DW notes.
The resolution calls for the European Union to provide all sorts of assistance to the Constitutional Court and demands to immediately release its members who are in custody . Deputies welcome the council “as a temporary representation of people requiring democratic changes in Belarus”, recalling that it was created as a temporary partner in the national dialogue in order to organize new elections.
The resolution also urges to refuse to finance Belarus , including lending to the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. At the same time, the document recommends supporting activists, human rights activists and representatives of the Civil Society of Belarus.
The European Parliament also offers to open a humanitarian corridor for people who are forced to escape from Belarus for political reasons and provide support to Belarusians who suffered as a result of violence and need treatment.
