The court in cassation declared the extension of the arrest of Jehovah's Witness illegal. The believer is still in custody

On September 9, the Eighth Court of Cassation of General Jurisdiction overturned the decisions of the Leninsky District Court of Novosibirsk and the Novosibirsk Regional Court to extend the preventive measure until April 22, 2020 for Jehovah's Witness Yuri Savelyev. This was reported on the website of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia.

Despite the cancellation of the decisions, the believer is in custody: in July the court extended his detention until October 22. On September 15, at a meeting, Savelyev’s lawyer asked for a mitigation of the preventive measure, citing the cassation ruling. The court rejected the request.

• On August 4, 2018, security forces installed secret surveillance in Yuri Savelyev’s apartment, and on November 7, 2018, the investigator opened a criminal case under the article on organizing the activities of an extremist organization (Part 1 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code). The next day, Savelyev’s house was searched and the believer was detained. At the same time, in Novosibirsk, in connection with the case against Jehovah’s Witnesses, investigative actions took place at ten more addresses.
• Recently, the cassation court in Pyatigorsk declared the preventive measure in the form of arrest of a participant in the 2019 protests in Ingushetia illegal. She is also in custody.
• On April 20, 2017, the Supreme Court recognized the “Administrative Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia” as an extremist organization, liquidated it and banned its activities in Russia. In August, all Jehovah's Witnesses organizations were added to the list of prohibited organizations. After this, a stream of criminal cases against representatives of the confession began.
