According to the lawyer, Dmitriev was sentenced to 13 years in a maximum security colony for sexual assault. Previously, the court sentenced him to 3.5 years in prison.

In 2018, the court completely acquitted Dmitriev of charges of producing child pornography and indecent assault, but sentenced him to 2.5 years of restriction of freedom for illegal possession of parts of a shotgun. A few months later, the Supreme Court of Karelia overturned the verdict of the first instance and sent the criminal case for a new trial. On June 27, 2018, Dmitriev was detained on suspicion of sexual abuse of his adopted daughter and arrested. The prosecutor's office requested 15 years in prison for him.
Memorial recognized Yuri Dmitriev as a political prisoner and demanded his release. “We have reason to believe that he became objectionable due to his professional activities, his independent political views , and attracting public attention to the annual International Days of Remembrance for the Victims of the Great Terror at the Sandarmokh Memorial Cemetery,” the society said in a statement.
