Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Mikhail Ptitsyn as the new chairman of the Moscow City Court.

Ptitsyn has been appointed for a six-year term, the presidential decree says. The document will come into force on October 24.

Mikhail Ptitsyn has worked in the judicial system since 1992. Previously, he headed the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don. Under his leadership, the court considered the case of Oleg Sentsov and Alexander Kolchenko on the preparation of terrorist attacks in Crimea.
In the summer of 2020, Ptitsyn became the only candidate to apply for the competition for the post of Chairman of the Moscow City Court. He was supported by the head of the Supreme Court of Russia, Vyacheslav Lebedev. The High Qualification Collegium of Judges approved Ptitsyn's candidacy.
The previous chairperson of the Moscow City Court, Olga Egorova, resigned in early September. She headed the court for 20 years and did not apply for a new competition, believed to be due to disagreements with the Supreme Court.It was reported that after her resignation, Egorova may go to work for the Moscow mayor's office.
