The European Union has imposed sanctions against approximately 40 Belarusian officials, said the head of the European Council, Charles Michel. They are being introduced “for election fraud and violation of human rights,” TASS reports .

“We decided to implement the sanctions that we agreed on in August. This means that on October 2, a black list of about 40 names will be implemented by written procedure,” he said, noting that Alexander Lukashenko is not yet on the list.

French President Emmanuel Macron explained this decision by saying that introducing restrictions against Lukashenko would affect Brussels' demand to begin a dialogue with the opposition through the mediation of the OSCE and to release political prisoners. According to Macron, imposing sanctions against Lukashenko would give him legal grounds to refuse to comply with these conditions.

The European Union announced the introduction of sanctions against Belarus on August 14. They were blocked for a long time by Cyprus, which simultaneously demanded the introduction of sanctions against Turkey.
