The Osiris probe, a few days ago, gathered the soil on the asteroid Benna to send him to the ground, lost part of the collected. This was reported in NASA.

The agency explained that the Osiris collected much more (several hundred grams) of the material from the surface of the asteroid than expected, since the manipulator, when the device was in contact with an asteroid, penetrated deeper into its surface. Because of this, the container cover could not close tightly, so the collected particles fly out of it.

“In fact, we became victims of our own success,” NASA said.

The agency explained that now they will accelerate the transfer of the container with the sample to a special sealed capsule for sending to the ground, as this is the only thing that can be done now.

• Osiris collected samples with Benn on October 21. The probe did not sit on the surface of the asteroid-it decreased to a minimum height, after which he touched the surface with a manipulator with a container for collecting samples.
• Asteroid orbit Bennu is located between Venus and Mars. NASA believes that potentially at the end of the XXII century it may encounter the ground - the probability of this event is estimated at 0.037%.
