Former Russian national hockey player Igor Musatov was sentenced to 4 years in prison in a cryptocurrency fraud case.

The Presnensky District Court of Moscow sentenced former member of the Russian national hockey team Igor Musatov to four years in a general regime colony in a case of cryptocurrency fraud worth $800 thousand. This was reported by the Moscow news agency with reference to the court.

33-year-old Musatov was found guilty under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code (fraud on an especially large scale).

According to investigators, the ex-hockey player met an investor on the cryptocurrency market to discuss cooperation and transactions with bitcoins. Musatov agreed with the businessman that he would sell him cryptocurrency for $800 thousand. The former athlete did not come to the meeting, the entrepreneur gave the money to an acquaintance of the hockey player, Vitaly Artemenko, and he eventually disappeared.

Since September 2019, Musatov has been in a pre-trial detention center; before that he was on the federal wanted list.

The hockey player played for Spartak, Atlant, Salavat Yulaev and other clubs of the Continental Hockey League. In 2007, he became a silver medalist at the World Youth Championship as part of the Russian national team.
