EU countries agreed on sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko

Permanent representatives of the EU countries in Brussels agreed on new sanctions against high-ranking officials of Belarus. This is reported by TASS with reference to a source in the delegation of one of the European countries.

According to the diplomat, the new black list will include the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. Officially, the decision will be approved by the EU Council in the coming days.

Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Yozwiak said that in addition to Lukashenka, 14 people would be subject to sanctions. They will have their assets frozen in Europe, and they themselves will be banned from entering the EU.

• In early October, the EU imposed sanctions against more than 40 Belarusian officials due to fraud in the presidential election and harsh crackdowns on protests. At that time, Lukashenko was not included in the list - Brussels explained this by the desire to preserve the opportunity for dialogue with Minsk.
• In mid-October, the EU announced that they were ready to add Lukashenka to the sanctions list if the situation in Belarus did not improve.
