A Russian Mi-24 helicopter shot down Azerbaijan, Interfax reports with reference to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
The department said that the helicopter was shot down by accident, Azerbaijan apologizes to the Russian side and is ready to pay compensation.
Updated . The Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia announced a criminal case on the downed helicopter. The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan has launched an investigation, as a result of which "the adoption of a legal and objective decision will be ensured."
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry claims that the Russian helicopter flew “in close proximity to the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border” at night, at low altitude and outside the detection zone of air defense radars.
Baku also claims that "Russian Air Force helicopters have not been seen in the specified area before."
“In the context of these factors and in the light of the tense situation in the region <...> the duty combat crew decided to open fire to kill,” the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan said (all quotes are from Interfax).
“The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry assures that the tragic incident was not directed against the Russian side,” reports . RIA Novosti
