A Russian Mi-24 helicopter was hit by a missile attack and crashed in Armenia, said the Russian Defense Ministry . According to preliminary data, two people died. Baku admitted that the helicopter was accidentally shot down by Azerbaijani forces and is ready to pay compensation.
On November 9, the Mi-24 was escorting a convoy of the 102nd Russian military base through the territory of Armenia, at about 17:30 Moscow time it was attacked from the ground, the ministry said. A rocket hit the helicopter, after which it fell in a mountainous area near the settlement of Yeraskh, almost on the border with Azerbaijan.
Rescuers left the place, the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported. According to preliminary data, two crew members were killed, one was evacuated with moderate injuries.
Who shot down the helicopter is still unknown, the Defense Ministry said. The command of the 102nd military base, stationed in Gyumri, has begun proceedings.
Baku admitted that the helicopter was shot down by Azerbaijani forces. This happened by accident, the incident was not directed against the Russian side, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said. Baku apologizes to Moscow and is ready to pay compensation, the ministry added.
