In the regions of Russia, constitutional courts will be abolished until January 1, 2023

The constitutional courts of the constituent entities of Russia should be abolished by January 1, 2023, while the regions will receive the right to create constitutional councils under the Legislations. This was reported by TASS with reference to amendments, approved by the adoption of the bill on the mechanism of termination of the powers of judges for the second reading.

The bill was introduced by Russian President Vladimir Putin and adopted in the first reading on October 21. Simultaneously with the abolition of constitutional courts, regions will receive the right to make a “decision on the creation of constitutional (charter) tips” in force under the legislative authorities.

After the law entered into force, the constitutional courts in the regions will not be able to accept new cases for proceedings, and the consideration of the cases already accepted must be carried out before the day the subjects of their laws on the abolition of such courts should be adopted, while “no later than January 1, 2023”.

New judges will not be appointed after the bill entered into force, and the current judges who have been resigned due to new norms will ensure the preservation of guarantees laid down according to the law.

According to another fixed amendment, the justice of the peace will become “judges of the general jurisdiction of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation,” the document says.
