The Ministry of Internal Affairs presented to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko a project for using AI to detect signs of serial crimes, the interlocutors of the publication said. It is also listed in the digital transformation project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - the introduction of AI is estimated at 55 billion rubles from the federal budget.

The roadmap for the project says that already in 2020 the Ministry of Internal Affairs will begin preparing technical specifications for the study of AI technologies in the work of the police, and in three years it will begin to develop specific software to search for serial criminals and to “determine individual anatomical features of a person obtained from biological material from crime scenes. The developer of the system has not yet been determined.

According to Kommersant, the Russian security forces have repeatedly tried to use AI for their own purposes, but it came down to recognizing faces and objects in images and videos. The fact that AI helped the Ministry of Internal Affairs to catch maniacs through biological evidence was discussed in Russia for the first time. Foreign law enforcement officers have long shown interest in AI-based technologies, says Aleksey Tsishevsky, COO of Handl.ai. For example, the company has received requests to develop technology to detect movement when a person draws a weapon, which could be used to protect American schools, says Tsishevsky.
