The native of Scotland Willyam Karrick spent most of his life in Russia, opened his own photo studio in St. Petersburg and in twenty years-from 1858 to 1878-created a large series of portraits of representatives of various classes

The family of Scottish merchants of Carriks settled in Russia in the 18th century. The grandfather of William Carrick was known on the London exchange as a "merchant from St. Petersburg." His son Andrew Carrick, also a merchant, in 1825, having arrived on business from St. Petersburg to Edinburgh, met his future wife there and, after the birth of his firstborn, moved his family from Edinburgh to Kronstadt, and then to Petersburg. Thanks to this, William Carrick lived in Russia all his life and became a photographer-ethnographer, taking pictures of the factory of Russian life.
