On Sunday, November 29, our science festival Science Bar Hopping will take place online. Presenter Irina Shikhman will discuss human fears and how to cope with them with seven scientists. Among the participants are the General Director of the Vector Center Rinat Maksyutov and the Chairman of the Board of Management Company RUSNANO LLC Anatoly Chubais. Registration is free.
The organizer of the festival is “Paper” . The official social network of Science Bar Hopping Online is VKontakte. “Paper” tells what interviews with scientists about fears and anxieties can be heard at the festival.

The main theme of Science Bar Hopping is anxiety and its validity. We studied the results of public opinion polls over several years and found out what Russians are most worried about. The list of topics included health, economics, international situation, ecology and longevity.
The program is divided into several blocks, each of which is associated with certain fears. For example, economist Anton Tabakh will tell you how the crisis that arose due to the pandemic differs from previous ones and how it affects people. And the head of the Yandex engine department laboratory, Alexander Krainov, will explain whether machines can do things that humans cannot.
Seven scientists will participate in Science Bar Hopping. The festival will start at 11.30 and last until the evening. The duration of each performance is 1 hour. All lectures are free, but it is better to register on the website - we will send you a reminder and a link to the broadcasts an hour before the start. The program can be viewed here .

Science Bar Hopping will be held online for the third time; previously the festival was held in bars in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Scientists gave their lectures there, and visitors could move between institutions, depending on what they wanted to learn about.
This time the format will change a little: instead of lectures there will be open interviews. Journalist Irina Shikhman, who has been running the YouTube channel “ Should we talk?” since 2017, will talk with scientists about fears and anxieties. "
— During past festivals, all our speakers and presenters were at home, but we still tried to make the picture and sound as high quality as possible: we sent them additional equipment and decor, and carried out technical tests. This time we have updated the format and will broadcast the interview live from the bar. It should turn out beautiful!
Some interviews will be in pairs. For example, biologist Alexander Tyshkovsky and head of the Biomedical Nanomaterials laboratory Maxim Abakumov will talk together about the impact of scientific technologies on human health and life. The topic of the first speaker will be longevity, the second - the treatment of diseases with technology.
— For several topics, we chose the format of paired interviews so that we could listen to scientists with different expertise, consider the issue from both sides and get the most complete picture possible.
2020 is full of worries, and one way to gain confidence in the future is to learn more about the dangers. At Science Bar Hopping, political scientist Fyodor Lukyanov will talk about what to expect from modern conflicts and explain why there will be no new world war, and Vector CEO Rinat Maksyutov will talk about the coronavirus vaccine being developed at the center.
“We didn’t ask scientists to convince us that everything was fine, but rather to give an objective assessment of what was happening. Sometimes our fears are based on rumors, prejudices and misinformation. We hope that Science Bar Hopping will help approach these worries from the scientific side and it will become obvious that everything is not so scary - or vice versa.
“We are convinced that the festival is one of the first successful experiments in building a new system of knowledge dissemination. Anxiety stems from two key characteristics of the modern world: complexity and speed. Both will only get stronger. The rules of the game will change more and more often. Predicting the future based solely on established trends is very risky. We all feel how often “something goes wrong.” In fact, this is not critical or scary, but society needs to get used to living in uncertainty, relying on the expert knowledge of scientists and the development of technology.
Podcasts "Papers" Science Bar Hopping , where scientists talk about how the Internet is changing our memory, why the weather in the Arctic is sometimes better than in St. Petersburg, and whether teleportation is real. There were three seasons in total.
In addition, watch the video on our YouTube channel “ A Scientist Walks into a Bar ” - about what scientists know about the Universe. In the first issue, physicists Andrei Seryakov and Anton Sheikin tell blogger Chuma Party about parallel universes and dark matter.
Previously, “Paper” talked about the exhibition in memory of Brodsky, which is taking place in the garden of the Fountain House. This is a pseudo-archaeological installation with furniture grown into the wall, poems and a portrait of a poet with a cat. Read more in our review.
