President Vladimir Putin introduced a bill to the State Duma banning second citizenship for officials. This was reported on the website of the lower house of parliament.
The document was introduced in connection with the adoption of amendments to the Constitution.
As stated in the explanatory note to the bill, people with a second citizenship or residence permit in another country will not be allowed to work in government agencies or local governments with access to state secrets.
Officials with access to state secrets will have to either renounce foreign citizenship or confirm their absence, otherwise they will be fired.
At the end of October, the State Duma adopted a bill allowing FSB and SVR employees to have a second citizenship and residence permits with the permission of management. This decision was explained by solving problems of “intelligence” or “operational and service” activities.
