The book " Economic science in difficult times. The well -thought -out solutions of the most important problems of our time ”(entering the publishing house of the Gaidar Institute) were written by Abhijit Banerji and Esther Duflo, last year's laureates for the Economics of Memory of Alfred Nobel. And she literally she is painful. The economic vector prevailing in the developed world does not contribute to solving the most acute social problems, the authors are convinced. But this does not deprive the economy - the very “queen of sciences” that Paul Samuelson considered it - opportunities to influence the situation with the hope of correcting it.
“We are tired of observing how public discussions on the main economic issues - immigration, trade, economic growth, inequality or ecology - become less and less reasonable,” the authors admit. “In the course of our thoughts, we realized that the problems that rich countries face are actually frighteningly reminiscent of the problems that we are used to exploring in the developing world - people forgotten as a result of development, inflated inequality, disbelief in the government, fragmentation of society and politics.”
Solutions of all these problems cannot be described by one tweet. And therefore, Banerji and Duffloe state, many have a desire to simply avoid them. In a new way to illuminate public debate, bringing a constructive beginning in them, economic theory is capable of. But how exactly?
