The United States imposed sanctions against the Secretariat of the Office of the Defense Industry of Turkey and its head of Ismail Demir due to the purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. This was announced by Secretary of State Michee Pompeo.
“Despite our warnings, Türkiye continued the purchase and testing of the Russian anti-aircraft missile system C-400,” said Pompeo. The United States "will not fail large transactions with the defense sector of Russia," he said. The restrictions are introduced according to the law "On the opposition of opponents of America through sanctions."
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said that "they will not refrain from taking measures that are considered necessary to ensure their national security." Earlier in Turkey it was noted that the United States could not provide the country with alternatives to the Russian air defense systems “for acceptable conditions for Turkey”.
