“How to study the history of the Internet: methods, approaches, ideas” is a collection of classes of online schools of the club lovers and society dedicated to the history of the Internet. Also in the focus of the authors of the book and science research book ( Science and Technology Studies, STS ), actor-net theory, platform studies ( Platform Studies ) and infrastructure studies ( Infrastructure Studies ).
In addition, the book presents methodological texts-“Tulbox” for novice researchers, which describes the algorithms of the Internet study in the city, its “cartography”, methods of deep interviews and digital ethnography, and ethics of Internet research.
The basis of the collection was the articles of Russian and foreign specialists in the field of Internet research and technology. These are sociologists Roman Abramov and Polina Kolozaridi from the Higher School of Economics, Nikolai Rudenko from the European University, Alexander Shirokov from the University of Ratger, Anna Shchertin from the University of Maastricht, Valeri Schafer of the National Center for Scientific Research of France and the University of Luxembourg and Christian Sandwig from the University of Michigan.
The coordinator of the club of Internet and society lovers, the editor and compiler of this book Leonid Yuldashev explains that together with students and teachers of the Higher School of Economics, the club of Internet lovers and society visited nine cities of Russia, where the club members interviewed, collected various press and materials of web archives.
The main goal of this study was to understand how the Internet developed and worked in Russia, but outside the two capitals. “We talked a lot about history this year, staged a series of seminars where we discussed empirical work in the field of Internet Histories , we continue to engage in our own projects - the history of the Internet in Tomsk, the history of the web. And when students of the HSE master's program “Transmedia production in digital industries” invited us to make a book (as part of the Venshkinsky course on digital book publishing), we decided that the book should be about this main topic of the year, ”writes Leonid Yuldashev on the club’s page on Facebook .
