In Yekaterinburg, a former police officer's conviction in a rape case was overturned
The Sverdlovsk Regional Court in Yekaterinburg overturned the conviction of three former police officers in a rape case, TASS reports.
They were released from custody, the court appointed a ban on certain actions (to communicate with each other and with the victim) as a measure of restraint. The case will be returned to the court of first instance, which will consider it in a new composition.
The motivational part of the decision is not known. The court of both instances was closed ( as a rule , hearings on crimes against sexual integrity are held behind closed doors).
- On July 15, 2020, the Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg sentenced police officers Vyacheslav Tropin and Andrey Bessarabov to six years each, their colleague Valim Mustafin received six and a half years.
- According to investigators, in August 2019 they detained a 22-year-old girl and raped her in a patrol car.
- All three were charged with rape and sexual assault committed by a group of persons with prior conspiracy.
- The patrolmen were fired after a service check, and their direct supervisors were also fired. Another 14 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of various levels received disciplinary sanctions.
