A participant in a rally against the redivision of the border between Chechnya and Ingushetia has his arrest extended

On December 24, the Essentuki City Court extended the detention of Magomed Khamkhoev, a defendant in the Ingush case, for two months. This is reported by the "Caucasian Knot".

Khamkhoev will remain under arrest until February 17. On December 24, the main hearing in his case was held, where key witnesses were supposed to speak, but one turned out to be ill, and the second was not taken to court.

Magomed Khamkhoev has been in detention since April 3, 2019. The next meeting is scheduled for January 14, 2021.

In July 2020, the judge of the Zheleznovodsk City Court, who considered the case of Khamkhoev, recused herself.

• Initially, Khamkhoev was charged with using violence dangerous to health against government officials (part 2 of article 318 of the Criminal Code) in connection with participation in a rally in Magas. He pleaded not guilty, and the investigation did not provide evidence. Then he was accused of inciting to commit a crime (part 1 of article 318 of the Criminal Code with the application of part 4 of article 33).
• On March 26, 2019, about 10 thousand people came out to a rally against the change of borders in Magas. About two thousand protesters remained on the square all night. In the morning they began to be dispersed, as a result of which clashes broke out between the security forces and the protesters .
• According to the Memorial Human Rights Center, as of November 23, 2020, 46 people were prosecuted in the wake of the rally in Magas, and prosecution against three of them was stopped. More than 30 defendants in the "Ingush case" were sentenced to imprisonment for terms ranging from 6 months to one year and eleven months.
