According to the Buryat SK, in the evening of January 5, 2020, Zhambalov returned to Ulan-Ude on his Toyota Land Cruiser Prado after fishing on Lake Kotkel. Near the village of Baturino, moving at a speed of at least 104 km/h, he ran into the 17-year-old Galina Burchevskaya, who crossed the road.
