Iran has begun enriching uranium to 20% at its Fordow nuclear facility, the Mehr agency reported, citing a statement from the country's government spokesman.

The country's authorities plan to produce at least 120 kilograms of such uranium per year. Tehran emphasized that it has already notified the International Atomic Energy Agency of its plans.

Iranian officials have stressed that if other countries that signed the 2015 nuclear deal return to compliance within the next three months, Tehran could abandon its efforts to make highly enriched uranium.

Immediately after Donald Trump came to power, the United States announced its desire to withdraw from the deal, accusing Tehran of violating its terms. Formally, this was done in the spring of 2020 - then Washington unilaterally reinstated anti-Iranian sanctions. Tehran and European countries then stated that they would try to maintain the agreements.
Trump's term in office ends on January 20. His successor as president, Joe Biden, has previously signaled his willingness to resume talks with Iran.
Under the nuclear deal, Iran was required to refrain from enriching uranium beyond 3.67%. Iran has been enriching uranium above that level in recent months, but has not yet enriched uranium beyond 4.5%.
