WHO: the number of people vaccinated against coronavirus in the world is equal to the number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic

The number of people who have been vaccinated against coronavirus has equaled the total number of officially registered cases of the disease. This was stated by WHO Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus.

On the one hand, this is good news and a notable achievement in such a short period of time. However, more than three-quarters of vaccinations occur in just 10 countries.

Ghebreyesus urged countries that have already vaccinated people at risk on their territory to cede the right to urgently purchase vaccines to other states, expressing confidence that this would be the best solution to quickly suppress the pandemic.

• the leaders in the number of vaccines per capita are Israel (62 injections per 100 people), the United Arab Emirates (39) and the United Kingdom (16) . The U.S. and China lead in absolute terms, with more than 30 million people vaccinated in each of these countries. The Russian authorities do not publish official vaccination statistics; in mid-January, it was reported that a million Russians (0.7% of the population) had received the vaccine.
• In total, more than 105 million cases have been reported since the start of the pandemic. In recent weeks, the growth rate of cases has dropped sharply: if at the very beginning of January more than 700 thousand new cases were recorded daily in the world, in early February this number fell to 400-500 thousand.
