Journalist Ivan Safronov gave an interview with Kommersant - the first during the detention in the Lefortovo pre -trial detention center, where he is already more than six months on charges of Gosemin.
Kommersant asked Safronov about how the investigation moves, how the conclusion was affected by his attitude to Russia and how to get used to the prison.
Safronov said that in six months no one explained to him the essence of the accusations. He confirmed that he was familiar with the Czech journalist Martin Larish, whom the investigation considers Safronov as a “recruiter”. In 2017-2019, Safronov wrote to the Internet project Larisha, but used information from open sources, says the journalist. At the same time, Safronov said that he did not communicate with the Czech after the device in Roscosmos.
Safronov does not know who is beneficial to put him, and does not imagine which of the officials that he wrote about could turn to the FSB. “The meaning of my content in jail is one - psychological pressure in order to break me and get confessions, that's all,” says Safronov. He continues to deny his guilt.
“I don’t even know what to say to all those people who support me throughout this time.” Only a lot and sincere thanks, because if not for you, then everything could be much worse than it really is. While people support me - friends, colleagues, just caring people - everything can be survived and overcome. I believe in it. So we break through and win!

Human rights activists and many journalists believe that Safronov’s criminal prosecution is associated with his journalistic activity. Officially, the FSB does not disclose the details of the case. The special service only stated that the criminal case against Safronov was not connected with his journalistic activity. At the same time, Safronova’s lawyer claimed that the FSB invited the accused to make a deal with the investigation and reveal his journalistic sources.
