EU countries have agreed to create digital certificates of vaccination against coronavirus in the near future. This was announced by German Chancellor Angela Merkel following the meeting of EU heads of state.

Merkel noted that the community countries expect to introduce the relevant certificates and integrate them into a single system in the next three months.

Merkel noted that such passports would make it possible to move freely within the EU. She also suggested that, perhaps, the presence of such a passport will become the basis for the entry of residents of third countries into the European Union.

Later, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel , stressed that the criteria for using such documents and possible privileges for their holders have not yet been determined.

• The European Union has closed its external borders to tourists from other countries since March 2020. In June 2020, residents of about a dozen states were allowed free entry into the EU, where at that time there was a minimum incidence - later this list was reduced several times. Now there are only six such countries - Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.
• Within the EU itself, travel is now also limited. A resident of any of the EU countries can enter most other EU states only if there are good reasons - for example, work or family reunification. Some countries allow free movement in the presence of tests for the absence of coronavirus.
