The governor of the Penza region was fired due to loss of confidence. He is suspected of bribery

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the early termination of the powers of the governor of the Penza region, Ivan Belozertsev. The head of the region was fired "due to the loss of confidence" in the president, the Kremlin reports.

Who will become the acting governor of the Penza region is still unknown.

• Ivan Belozertsev has headed the Penza region since 2015. In the 2020 elections, he was re-elected to the post of governor with almost 79% of the vote.
• On March 21, Belozertsev was detained on suspicion of taking bribes. A prominent businessman, founder of the Biotek group of pharmaceutical companies Boris Shpigel and his wife Evgenia were suspected of giving bribes. They were also detained.
