We continue the discussion about the extinction of dinosaurs. In the last issue of the Trinity Option, we devoted five pages to this discussion , but we can say that "we did not finish." Firstly, it was not clearly articulated on what arguments the hypothesis was based on the decisive role of an asteroid in the phenomenon of the extinction of dinosaurs-why it became the mainstream among paleontologists. This omission is corrected by the zoologist Pavel Tyro .
Secondly, there was a lack of nothing about the role of volcanism-there was a contradiction between Paleontologist Andrei Zhuravlev and Geophysicist Alexei Ivanov . The dispute continues in this issue, although it, perhaps, is not completed here, and it is unlikely that a point can be set here with modern data. Paleontologist Kirill Yeskov In conclusion, it objects to our natural desire to look for simple solutions to complex problems.

Regardless of our personal preferences, the scientific hypothesis is considered a “priority” (= mainstream) if it most simply explains the event and contains the smallest number of contradictions and assumptions. At the moment, such a hypothesis is precisely the “impact” hypothesis (= asteroid fall). The “volcanic” hypothesis, like the rest (for example, “environmental”), are less supported by scientific facts. This does not mean that in the future they cannot become priority - this is quite possible subject to the discovery of new data confirming these hypotheses and not consistent with the impact (or it refuted).
The most important evidence of the impact as a key trigger of extinction are considered:
1) the temporary coincidence of the impact and mass extinction [1, 2] (see an alternative point of view, see [3]);
2) the rapid (catastrophic) disappearance from the paleontological annals of representatives of some groups, including Nepting dinosaurs [4] (see an alternative point of view, in [5]) and various marine organisms (for example, bentlet mollusks, see [6]);
3) the quick “acidification” of the ocean, which coincides in time with the impact (but not with the initial phases of volcanism, see [7]);
4) temporary cooling on the border of the mela/Paleogene, which is better explained by the fall of the asteroid into the oil region of the Mexican Gulf (followed by the release of aerosols and soot into the stratosphere; see, for example, [8]);
and 5) the temporary mismatch of the most active phases of volcanism and mass extinction [9] (an alternative point of view, see [10]).
Of the weak places of the impact hypothesis, it is worth noting the complex explanatory sector (= selectivity) of extinction. If we take the North American Late Nine-Grannopaleogene Faunas of the vertebrates, it turns out that some groups on the chalk of chalk/paleoen disappear completely from the annals (for example, Neptedic dinosaurs), some partially (for example, certain types of crocodiles, turtles, marsupial mammals disappear), and some extinction did not affect completely (they survive completely in full The composition of amphibians and placental mammals), see [11].
At first glance, such selectivity is difficult to agree with a global catastrophic phenomenon and requires a significant amount of assumptions. Nevertheless, the complete extinction of non -stroke dinosaurs can be explained by a chain of events: suppressing plant photosynthesis (due to the release of aerosols and soot during the stratosphere and temporary “shielding” of the earth's surface from solar radiation) - the death of part of the plants - a significant reduction in the food base of vegetable dinosaurs and their extinction, and then the extinction of large predatory dinosaurs.
At the same time, water vertebrates (crocodiles, turtles, choristaders) survive, because in ecosystems where they live, trophic chains do not begin with photosynthetic plants (producers), but with detritus (decaying organics), which means they are more resistant to temporary suppression of photosynthesis in plants [1]. The situation with amphibians and placental mammals is more complicated for explanation, however, it should be noted that this is the vast majority of non -vegetable forms.
It is interesting to note the recent idea [1] that deck volcanism (namely, the release of greenhouse gases during eruptions), on the contrary, prevented the critical cooling caused by the impact, and “saved” many groups from extinction.
To obtain an answer to the question "What did the dinosaurs die out?" We still lack data about the dynamics of the variety of dinosaurs before extinction and the nature of their extinction at various points of the globe. While we focus on the only continuous in the interval “The very end of the chalk - the beginning of Paleogene” the sequence of the faun of ground vertebrates, known from North America. It is possible that the main causes of the extinction of Nepticial dinosaurs were different in different geographical areas. Nevertheless, paraphrasing the famous statement of Winston Churchill, one can characterize the current situation: “The impact hypothesis is the worst hypothesis, except for everyone else.”

Honestly, for me, the questions are of much greater interest why someone appeared at this time and in this place, and to a lesser extent, I am intrigued by the problem of extinction. In the last riddles, there is much smaller, since there is a long backstory, captured in sedimentary, volcanic and other deposits - based on these data, tested hypotheses can be built.
For example, the minimum volumes of volcanic deposits dedicated to the Perm-TRAS line in Siberia, and the approximate time interval for which they have been formed are known. Knowing how much and what gases such a type of volcanoes are highlighted today, it is not difficult to build a model for the growth of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at the sophisticated line, add data to it on the additional revenues of carbon dioxide and halogen as a result of heating of carbon foam and saline deposits that were in the field of eruption, and see what results for the biospheres all this could lead to.
Next, again turn to geological deposits and find changes in lithological, isotopic and elemental composition, indicating a sharp increase in temperature, to acidify the waters of the ocean, etc. This data is applied to quantitative indicators in a change in the composition of fossils and integers, the abundance of species, their distribution in space, etc. This can be said that it can be said that the Perm-Russian The volcanic disaster has really led to significant changes in the biosphere ...
And to note that primarily groups of organisms were affected, most susceptible to the negative effects of the above factors through hypercapnia (i.e. poing CO2), anxia (lack of oxygen in the body), increased acidity and water temperature. Moreover, the unusual paleogeography of the planet “helped” the volcanoes, when at the most difficult moment the most diverse sea faunes were in the trap of the half -closed aunt's ocean.
This means that if such a volcanic disaster in other circumstances happened, it would affect the biosphere to a lesser extent, or maybe (as in the Cambrian period), and would not have affected at all.
And let's not forget about the evolution of the vegetation cover, since the most important plants of plants - blood vessels, the root system, tree forms, seeds - led to significant changes in the pace of weathering on land and volumes of biogenic substances entering the ocean, and, as a result, to significant climate changes (Fig. 1) [ 1 ].

It was then, at the beginning of the Late Nazi era, that coral reefs practically disappeared, since the features of the composition of coral skeletons did not allow these creatures to deposit biominerals at a high level of carbon dioxide. And it is difficult to single out any specific animals of the very end of the Cretaceous period to whom the “resort” was contraindicated.
If we look at the changes in the composition of the faun of large sea vertebrates at the end of the Mesozoic era, then the picture will be very colorful. Ichthyosaurs, for example, completely disappeared at the beginning of the earlyelic era (c. 90 million years ago). Moreover, judging by their diversity, say, in the seas of Europe, they also “didn’t think” to die out, like dinosaurs, who lived to a chalk-paleogen line [ 3 ].
Is it really for them his volcano or meteorite, who wished to remain unknown, was stored? After their departure, the role of the main "fish -made" went to the mosaurs. And it seems that these sea varanians felt good up to famous events. However, again, like dinosaurs, only in places: for example, in the highly productive Moroccan Apvelling zone - they flourished [4], and in the Gulf of Mexico their diversity (as well as other large vertebrates) fell sharply a few million years before a meteorite strike [ 5 ]. Probably, they “foresaw” that nothing good awaits them in this place.
Probably, such changes in the composition of vertebrates occurred on land, but, alas, due to the fragmentation of continental deposits with the desired detail, they cannot be reconstructed. But the biggest difficulty is not to understand the extinction of large dinosaurs, but on the question: why have small birds with a high level of metabolism died out? In other words, why did some birds die out, while others survived?

Alexey Ivanov , Dokt. Geol.-Min. sciences, head of the Central Committee of the Central Committee of the Geochronology of the Institute of Earth's Corta SB RAS, Irkutsk
Many years ago-so many traces on the Internet are no longer located-I wrote my first popular science note about how scientists proved that dinosaurs died out as a result of a meteorite fall. Today I am not sure that it was the fall of the meteorite that led to their death, and is more than sure that the phrase “scientists have proven a meteorite hypothesis” is very far from reality.
The meteorite hypothesis looks very attractive. They lived for themselves without knowing anything, dinosaurs on Earth. Suddenly a large meteorite fell into sulfate sea rainfall. As a result, gigatons of dust and sulfur in the form of SO2 and SO3 were thrown into the atmosphere [1]. Sulfur dioxide and trioxide, in contact with water, were converted into sulfuric acid forming a layer in the stratosphere. In addition to the effect of dusting at the atmosphere, this led to a sharp short-term cooling due to the reflection of solar heat. Then the acid rains spilled. Finally, sulfuric acid reduced the oxidative potential of the atmosphere, which led to the accumulation of greenhouse gases (see article [2] with a description of the process). As a result, who did not die from the cold and acid rains, he did not survive global warming.
Obviously, in this scenarios, dinosaurs, as well as other animals, died out quickly (years, a maximum of decades) and their mass residues should be directly in the impact layer with global distribution, that is, in the clay formed from the dust atmosphere, or to immediately lie on it. However, there are still no finds of dinosaurs in this layer at all. The traditional explanation connects this with the adverse property of the burial of bone residues of large ground animals. Nevertheless, catastrophic volcanic eruptions, which, to some extent, can be assumed by the local analogue of meteorite impact, led to massive burials of animals, including ground dinosaurs; For example, these include mass burials of biota Zhehol of exceptional safety [3]. Accordingly, if the impact hypothesis is correct, sooner or later such mass burials will be found.
What about the volcanic hypothesis? With abnormal eruptions in volcanoes, the effects are similar in principle. Ashes and sulfur are also thrown into the atmosphere, this also initially leads to sharp cooling and subsequent warming [2]. Assessments for Dekan trapps by the number of thrown out sulfur are comparable to estimates for Chiksulubsky impact [4]. The difference is that the impact leads to emissions of matter into the atmosphere almost instantly, and volcanism is stretched for millennia. The results of modern modeling seem to show that impact could lead to extinction of dinosaurs, but volcanism could not [5].
However, modeling depends on the input parameters that are poorly known. Therefore, we consider whether they are consistent with the volcanic hypothesis of the finds of dinosaurs? To do this, we will use the data from the article [6], in which the sequence of eruptions of the dean trapps (Fig. 1a) is restored, and compare with the sedimentary sequence of the Hell-Crick (USA) formation, in which the most complete sequence of dinosaurs was found [7, 8, 9] (Fig. 1b, 1c).

Figures 1B and 1C show a sedimentary section of Hell-Crick, related to the late chalk and the richest of the remnants of dinosaurs in comparison with other sedimentary deposits of this age in any other part of the planet. Figure 1V with fat arrows shows areas of the finds of bone residues of alvaresavors (4 sample), and in Figure 1C - tricratops (24 samples). The more ancient bones are at the bottom of the cut, and the younger ones are at the top. The bone residues of tricratops, including those that were found even lower and did not get to the 1C drawing, turned out to be enough to trace their evolutionary changes over time [8]. Finally, in Figure 1, the arrow shows the find of the horn of the ceratops, found only 13 cm below the iridium anomaly, marked the time of the fall of the Chiksulubsky meteorite.
The sedimentary cut of the Hell-Krick formation has two temporary markers: the upper is an iridian anomaly and, 30 meters lower-a layer containing a volcanic ash of local eruption. According to 40ar/39ar dates, between them 300 thousand years. That is, on average, every 10 cm of sedimentary rocks accumulated over a thousand years. It is clear that the sands accumulated faster, and clay more slowly, but, one way or another, the youngest of the dinosaur found in this section died about a thousand years before the meteorite fell.
In drawings 1a, b, C are also paleomagnetic scales.
Rice.

"Is it true?
