The American Republican Senator Pat Tumi on Thursday announced the need to supplement the sanctions imposed on this day by the US administration against Russia with limiting measures against Northern Stream 2, the statement published on his website said.

“The sanctions announced by the White House this morning are the long -awaited step to hold Moscow liable for continuing aggression on her part,” he said, noting that additional sanctions should also be imposed. “The United States should impose sanctions against Northern Stream 2.

On Thursday, the US authorities announced new sanctions against Russia. In the framework of these restrictions, Washington decided to send 10 of its employees from the diplomatic mission of the Russian Federation in Washington. The US Treasury announced new sanctions against Russian public debt.

In the United States, many congressmen (both Republicans and Democrats) advocate strengthening sanctions pressure on Nord Stream 2, Interfax reports. In particular, a number of initiatives in this direction were undertaken by the Senator-Republican from Texas Ted Kruz: until recently, he blocked the procedure for approving the key leaders of the State Department and promised that he would continue to do this until he sees new restrictive measures against the gas pipeline.

However, earlier this week, Cruz stopped blocking this procedure: the Senate approved the appointment of Wendy Sherman First Deputy Secretary of State.

In the US Presidential Administration, Joe Biden agrees that you need to try to prevent the completion of the construction of this gas pipeline. But at the same time, the White House would like to improve the US relations with Germany, which supports the project , greatly affected under Donald Trump. For this reason, as the American media noted, Biden, not wanting to annoy Berlin, while refraining from more decisive actions against the gas pipeline project.

Earlier in April, the Politico publication reported that the US Ministry of Justice gave the Green Light for two more sanctions packages directed against Nord Stream 2 AG, responsible for the planning, construction and functioning of the gas pipeline, and its head of Matias Barnig.

However, later, according to the sources of this publication, permission to such sanctions was withdrawn, since the administration continues to disputes, whether such sanctions are allowed from the point of view of the law. "The congressmen from both parties have already applied to the State Department for clarifications on the abolition of this decision," the publication wrote.

According to the plan, the White House in May 2021 should submit to Congress another report on measures taken against Northern Stream 2. It is assumed that it is then that it may become known about the introduction of new sanctions.
