The NASA Ingenuit Marsolet today made the first flight over Mars. This is the first controlled flight of the device heavier than the air in the atmosphere of another planet - the true “moment of the Wright brothers,” said the US space agency.
“Ingenuity successfully promoted the rotors, separation, a set of heights, freezing, reduction, landing and braking of the rotors,” the NASA said in a statement. The agency’s website already has a photo of the shadow of the apparatus on the surface of Mars, shot by its own camera.
The first flight was actually a test flying to a height of about three meters for tens of seconds. Nevertheless, this is a huge achievement: so far the only extraterrestrial aircraft were the uncontrollable balloons of Soviet Vega stations in a very dense atmosphere of Venus. The atmosphere of Mars, on the contrary, is very rarefied, and a marceolet weighing about 2 kg barely grabs the traction -cutting for the flight even with large screws rotating at a huge speed of 2500 rpm.
Subsequently, Ingenubi will be used to explore the route that delivered it to Mars of Persevrance Rover. Due to energy restrictions, flights will be limited by a range of 50 meters and a time of 90 seconds with a return to the source. The apparatus carries a piece of sheathing the first apparatus in the world heavier than the air with an engine that made a completely controlled flight - the Wright brothers took off in 1903.
