Moldovan President Maia Sandu dissolved parliament and set a date for new elections

Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed a decree dissolving the parliament, reports . Interfax

Sandu announced new parliamentary elections on 11 July.

“We must get rid of this corrupt parliament as soon as possible, whose deputies advocate gray schemes and steal from citizens. Now the choice is yours, dear fellow citizens," she told reporters.

Sandu said that the government should allocate money for the election campaign, and the Central Electoral Commission should ensure conditions for holding fair and free elections.

Earlier, the Constitutional Court of Moldova declared illegal the decision of the Parliament to introduce a state of emergency in the country from April 1 to May 30 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The request to cancel the decision was submitted by independent MP Octavian Ticu and MPs of the Action and Solidarity party Sergei Litvinenko and Veronica Rosca.

The introduction of the state of emergency in Moldova became known on March 31. 52 out of 101 members of the Legislative Assembly voted for this decision. Deputies from Sandu's Action and Solidarity party did not vote for the introduction of a state of emergency.

The regime meant tightening the rules for entering and leaving the country, introducing a special regime of movement across the country, a ban on holding mass events, introducing rationed consumption of food and essentials, and establishing a special regime for all organizations.
